Mr. Kobayashi-Solomon worked in the sales and trading division of a major U.S. investment bank in both Tokyo and New York before moving to the buy side as the founder of a start-up hedge fund then as the market risk manager for a global long-short equity hedge fund. In 2007, Mr. Kobayashi-Solomon moved to Chicago to serve as head of Morningstar’s semiconductor equity research group. At Morningstar, he later co-founded and served as principal co-editor of the OptionInvestor newsletter and as Morningstar’s Market Strategist.
Mr. Kobayashi-Solomon began a private consulting practice in 2013, when he accepted a commission to build a standardized valuation model for the International Financial Corporation’s (World Bank Group’s private investing arm) emerging market private equity investment.
At this time, he also began work on his first book, The Intelligent Option Investor, a unique explanation of how options can be used as tools to effect value investing strategies, published in 2014 by McGraw-Hill. The Chinese translation of The Intelligent Option Investor was released in February 2020, just as the COVID outbreak was beginning!
The originality and insights in The Intelligent Option Investor made a big impact in the world of institutional investing and Mr. Kobayashi-Solomon has been invited to speak to the value investing team at Blackrock, the New York Society of Security Analysts (founded by Benjamin Graham and the progenitor of the Chartered Financial Analyst organization), and at the University of Chicago and Northwestern University
Mr. Kobayashi-Solomon founded Framework Investing, an online training program based on the insights in his book, and is enjoys helping people understand what wonderful investment tools options can be when used intelligently.
